Thinking out loud

I'm sitting here on my bed, too hot to continue with the housework that so desperately needs to be done, finding my mind wandering around like a wandering-around-thing so thought this a perfect time for a final blog post for the year.

I've neglected both blogging and Twitter for the last few months, and I'm not even really sure why. I do know that I was finding myself spending far too much on Twitter and getting even less done than usual, so I guess a big break was called for. Blogging seems to kind of go with Twitter, so it fell by the wayside as well.

Venturing hesitantly back to Twitter last week I was touched to see so many "Hi, wherethehelluvyoubin?"messages and therefore felt immediately guilty for disappearing without a trace and not letting my lovely tweeps know I was just having a break. So sorry. Again. I know I have also neglected to follow all your lovely bloggedyblogs, so am going to make a cuppa in a minute and play catch-up!

So, here we are at the tail end of 2009. Good year? Not so much. It's been a year of dithering and Really Bad Employment History. I've spent far more of this year unemployed than otherwise, and have gotten lazy and meh in the process.

On a good note, however, Tall D and I have made it through the year without deciding we hate each other, lol! In fact, we are on the verge of moving in together, assuming I can find a job before the kids start at their respective new schools! This blending of families will, I'm sure, be a big adjustment for all concerned, but I'm hopefull we can find some mishy-mashy way of squishing us all together in a reasonably acceptable fashion!

Another tick on the positive side is the fact that I've finally obtained my Certificate IV in Training and Assessment, so am now actually qualified to do vocational training and assessment. Now I just have to get past the rather massive obstacle of all job ads stating unequivocably that they REQUIRE all applicants to have 2+ years of experience. Hmmmmm...

Anyhoo, that's my end of 2009 rambling rambles. Time to get re-acquainted with the blogosphere. Wishing all of you lovely people all the best for the New Year and may 2010 bring you all that you desire!

Mum's got a boyfriend...

... or so I was informed by Madame Z the other day, over and over in a whiny singsong voice.

Factually, this is, indeed, totally accurate. D and I met over a year ago, and have been together ever since. We are "dating", I am reliably informed. We do not live together, however we are looking at possibly addressing that at some point in the future, if only he lived in an area that had better high schools, grumble, grumble. But that's another issue.

I was on Twitter a little while ago and made reference to D as my 'boyfriend', however my fingers nearly refused to type the word, as it reeks of high school, giggling and airy-fairy 1960's pop songs. We are both in our 40's (although, obviously, he's been there MUCH longer than I have and is much better at it all round) and the use of the terms 'boyfriend' and 'girlfriend' sound wildly inappropriate to my aging ears. I mean, I have grey hair, damnit, I'm way too old to have a 'boyfriend', aren't I?

But what alternatives are there? The preferred modern term seems to be 'partner', but I always associate that with couples who are actually cohabitating, not ones living separately and seeing each other whenever family and work commitments permit.

Significant Other, Better Half, Other Half. How wanky are those? Oh, but yes, I've used them all at one time or another in a desperate effort to avoid use of the boyfriend word.

And why is it that it sounds ok when he refers to me as his girlfriend, but it sounds absurd for me to call him my boyfriend? Perhaps it's because I still consider myself a giggly teenager and am happy to wear the expression, who knows?

I think 'partner' is probably most accurate. It's a bit sterile and generic, though. I think 'partner in crime' is much more exciting (if somewhat inaccurate), or 'managing partner' or 'partners in pissups'?

None are quite right, though. Perhaps this is all just divine retribution for failing at the hallowed institute of marriage and finding myself in this position in the first place.
